  • Please put everything away except for a periodic table, scrap piece of paper and a pen or pencil.
  • Log in to Socrative (room: sci9) and wait for the quiz to begin.
  • When you finish the quiz, please start working on the Nomenclature of Chemical Bonds Activity (explained below).

Objective:
Understand the nomenclature of all types of ionic compounds.

Agenda:
  1. Quiz: Acids Nomenclature (Socrative)
  2. Nomenclature of Chemical Bonds graphic organizer activity
  3. Ionic compounds games (see below)

Nomenclature of Chemical Bonds Activity (12 points):

Your assignment is to create a graphic organizer using Lucidchart that categorizes the types of chemical compounds and the steps for naming them.

Instructions:
  1. Go to https://www.lucidchart.com/
  2. Click LOG IN on the top right hand corner of the page
  3. Scroll down and click sign in with Google (use your ASFM Google account)
  4. Select create blank flowchart and title it: Nomenclature of Chemical Bonds. (1 point)
    • This title will also be the first "bubble" on your flowchart.
  5. You must include the following categories: (1 point for correct layout)
    • Ionic Compounds
      • Binary Compounds (E.g. Metal + Non-Metal)
      • Ternary Compounds (E.g. Metal + Polyatomic Ion or Polyatomic + Non-Metal)
      • Acids - Binary Acids and Oxyacids
    • Covalent Compounds (we have not learned this yet, we will add it later)
  6. For each category, list the steps for naming the compounds (1 point for each category = 5 points)
  7. For each category, provide two examples - chemical name and chemical formula (1 point for each category = 5 points)
  8. Submit your graphic organizer in the science 9 folder I have made for you in Google Drive

*You may use any shapes, colors, sizes, and fonts to make it your own! Be creative.

Closure:
With a partner, summarize the steps for naming each type of ionic compound without using your notes. Be prepared to share with the class.

Homework:
  1. Finish the Nomenclature of Chemical Bonds graphic organizer activity
  2. Quiz: Nomenclature of Ionic Compounds - W5, D3
