Understand the history of the study of the atomic nature of matter.
PTT:
Please go to m.socrative and login using WendtC111. Complete the Chemistry Pre-Test. This quiz is simply a pre-assessment that will me know how much you remember about chemistry from last year. Do not worry about the grade you get since it will not count in powerschool. Once you are finished, please taco your computers until your remaining classmates finish the quiz. Good luck.
Introduction:
You know now that all matter is composed of atoms, but this was not always known. The idea that matter is made up of discrete units is a very old one, appearing in many ancient cultures such as Greece and India. The word "atom", in fact, was coined by ancient Greek philosophers. The name atom comes from the Greek word ἄτομος (atomos, "indivisible"), something that cannot be divided further.
However, these ideas were founded in philosophical and theological reasoning rather than evidence and experimentation. As a result, their views on what atoms look like and how they behave were very incorrect. They also couldn't convince everybody, so atomism was but one of a number of competing theories on the nature of matter. It wasn't until the 19th century that the idea was embraced and refined by scientists, when the blossoming science of chemistry produced discoveries that only the concept of atoms could explain.
Task #2:
Research and Presentation Activity
Teacher will assign each team a Scientist who was involved in the major discoveries of the Atomic Structure.
Teams will be given 20 minutes to research the scientist(s) and find information on the following:
Portrait of the scientist
Time Period
Discovery/Theories
Experiments
Model
Teams will have 4 minutes to present their findings in Google slides next class to their classmates.
Please include a citation page with 2-3 sources/references.
Presentations: (note: these will act as the notes for the history of the atom)
